Musings from the Union.....

I was getting coffee in the student union today, and as I stood waiting for my latte, I started to listen to the people around me and quickly realized I was surrounded by different cultures. I heard no less than four separate languages (including English), and I would go so far as to say that I (a white female) was actually a minority in the coffee shop. And no, there was no meeting of the Black Student Union, or the Asian Student Union, or the Indian Student Union; apparently I've worked here for over 8 months without really noticing just how diverse this campus is. I swear I'm starting to notice these things more and more thanks to my Diversity in Counseling class, which is by far my favorite class, and quite literally makes my head spin. I leave class and spend my hour-long drive home contemplating my biases and stereotypes and considering the reasons for my lack of exposure to other cultures and how to change that. And then I talk the fiance's ear off about my self-discoveries and spend just about every other waking mintue acutely aware of my role (or lack thereof) in this diverse world. No kidding, every single person should be required to take this class.

Whoooo, the reactions this site will get out of people from all walks of life! I had to write a 2-page response to it that turned into a 6 page novella. It's important stuff, though.
